Spam-spam-metrics-n-spam

A client of ours recently reported a huge traffic surge. They were excited and wanted to find out which of their marketing efforts was driving the huge number of visitors.

The answer was not what they wanted to hear.

We traced the spike to a new botnet that just launched in California and China. The traffic wasn’t from new customers. It was from spammers trying to post comment spam on their blog. Their comment filters dutifully blocked each and every comment and their metrics software dutifully recorded each hit.

You should be monitoring your metrics and making decisions that build steady traffic growth.

Just make sure the growth isn’t coming from spammers.

The etymology of spam

Why are unwanted comments or email referred to as “spam?” As far as anyone has been able to determine, the term comes from the famous Monty Python sketch. The whole story is at Wikipedia.
